When to Avoid a Flight?
When to avoid a risky flight?
1) If your flight passes through a conflict zone, or even passes in the vicinity of one, AVOID THE FLIGHT. Period.
How do you define a conflict zone for a flight?
If both the warring parties possess ballistic missile capabilities, that's the danger zone for flights.
You may ask, "Do you want me to know who all possess ballistic missile systems on my flight route? Have you gone crazy?"
Not exactly. First see if you pass through a war/conflict zone. Eg. Mali, Libya, Afghanistan, India-Pakistan border areas, North Korea etc.
Then see if the warring parties have ballistic systems. So, if your flight passes through Mali, its relatively safer. The terrorist organisations are unsophisticated. They definitely cannot hit a 40000th ft flight.
But, Middle East, India Pakistan borders, Ukraine, when tensions rise in these regions, absolutely avoid flights that pass by or, just across these regions. Here the primary stakeholders have immense capabilities and if the conflict heats up, its very dangerous for flights. Because missiles possess heat signature devices and for them a whizzing commercial flight and a fighter jet are the same.
2) Go through the news headlines in the source city of a flight take off. If that day's newspapers and cables are prominently showing a sensational suicide or homicide, AVOID THE FLIGHT. Strange?
Research has shown that whenever, a suicide, especially by a celebrity, is prominently covered by newspapers in a city, accident rates of flights and cars increase 1000% in that city for the next few days.
Why does this happen? Principle of social proof. It so happens that some readers of the news may have a low-hanging suicidal tendencies. The news acts a trigger to switch on their self destruction mode and the reader may do so by plunging a flight or crushing a car. I know, it's scary. But, that's an observation, so better avoid flights for atleast the next week. Or, if in emergency, buy a bigger insurance.
3) Inclemental weather. Google search about weather in different parts of your flight route. Especially if you are flying on the big oceans. Search whether there are reports of major turbulences reported by other flights and if the weather is still persisting as such. And if your flight is flying through the same route, AVOID THE FLIGHT.
You may think, who will do all this preparation everytime I fly. But, remember, unlike land transport, there's no scope for injuries on flight crash. Flight crash means no survivors. Why not spend a little over 15 minutes doing some research about your flight journey, if it can save your or, your loved ones' lives.
Several websites such as flightradar24, flightview etc. help you track the route and other details.
Have a safe flight! 🙂
