Draining $700 million down the swamp?

The entry of Mike Bloomberg in the US presidential race was odd from the beginning. Not least because he was similar to Donald Trump. Also, because the democratic campaign was crowded already. His campaign themes were roughly similar to other moderates in the gang. There was no particular USP except that he was worth $60 billion! Although no doubt, he ran a very successful corporation; but for me, the question was, why exactly did Mike Bloomberg enter the presidential race this time, that late? Here are some theories-

a) Enter the Ghostly Overlord (EGO)

America(as a result Americans), despite all the boasting of being a 'Christian state' (whatever that means), is far from being a moral and spiritual nation. Although to be fair, Mike is a Jew. Another issue- In a largely Christian-majority country where some (many?) people still believe Earth is flat, evolution is false, and evangelists are authorities, a Jewish president is still a low probability.
But, Americans are by far the most materialistic of people in the history of homo sapiens. Take out any piece of statistics, Americans will be the highest consumers of those products- energy, iron, aluminum, lithium, carbon, etc. However, the US is reeling through tremendous inequality, which means that 'greed' is overtly at the top/ cream of the social milieu. Nevertheless, there's a general tendency to be super ambitious. This is reflected by the self-help books from America, brainwashing people to go after the planet. So, why wouldn't a man, who's worth is more than the GDP of 90+ countries, go after the most powerful position on the planet.
His ambition was aided by two other facts- a) He was a reasonably successful mayor of New York b) His fellow New Yorker (Trump) with much smaller net worth was now the president.
At the very top, many times, all that matters is ego.
Mike would have gotten into the belief that he could outspend Trump and win.

b) The Decoy

There's another possibility. This one is what my gut tells, but it is a conspiracy theory!
Mike Bloomberg may have been a decoy candidate to defeat Bernie Sanders out of democratic candidature. Yes, for all the DumpTrump ads, the billionaires are more afraid of Bernie Sanders.
Although it is hard to think that Mike himself would have wanted to be like that (decoy). But, his billionaire friends in New York would have pushed him for exactly that role.
Mike's ad blitz (estimated at $500 million) for one, proliferated moderate-democrat messages. People might have as well thought to choose the more 'experienced' of the moderates i.e. Joe Biden. That was the classic decoy effect in action. Otherwise, how can Biden win primaries in states he didn't even campaign properly or, have offices? He even won Elizabeth Warren's home state!
Ironically, it was Warren who is said to have brought down Mike during debates where she attacked him on his sexist comments and policies while leading his company.
But, the job was done for Mike.

Conclusion-
-- It's hard to think that a savvy investor like Mike Bloomberg would put hundreds of millions of dollars just for burning them up. The aim first was to sideline the hardline leftist brigades within the party.
--For the powerful lobby groups (military, pharma, petro, tech) in the US, Bernie or, even Warren was more deep disruptors than Trump.
-- While Bernie campaign is trying hard to appease to the 'proletariat', that class is solidly under the control of the global forces. As the panic surrounding corona shows, fake news and information deluge can very easily change narratives. The social media campaign during the 2016 campaign is another example.

Joe Biden entered the race late and was quite haphazard in campaign conduct. It was the Super Tuesday boost to Biden, which finally seems to have charged his campaign and as well clinch him the democratic nomination. And Mike Bloomberg will have gotten his investments right, one more time!
